Degree in Biology

Final Degree Project

The final degree project (TFG) will be developed in the last year of the Degree and may take the form of research (experimental or theoretical), design or management, always on a topic related to the Degree in Biology. The TFG must verify the acquisition by the student of the general and specific skills and competences described in the objectives of the degree. The specific competences that will be reinforced in the TFG will depend on the specific nature of each project.

The work will be carried out independently by the students, will be supervised by at least one teacher, and will culminate with the submission of a written thesis and the public presentation and defence of the same. The thesis has a length limit of 30 pages and must include the typical sections of scientific publications in Biology (introduction, results, discussion, etc.). Both the written thesis and the defence before the committee may be carried out totally or partially in English.

Students may enroll in the TFG once they have a maximum of 78 ECTS credits left to obtain the degree, but in order to present and defend the work they must have passed the 180 ECTS credits corresponding to the first 3 years, as well as the external internships.

Every year, the Degree in Biology will offer a series of TFG topics that is sufficient for all enrolled students. The order in which students choose will depend on their academic record. Departments may also offer TFG topics proposed by students, which will be pre-assigned to the people who made the proposal. Students who are interested in this second option must begin by contacting a professor who can tutor the work they wish to propose.

The assessment of the Final Degree Project will be carried out by the person or persons who are tutoring the project, as well as by a Tribunal appointed for this purpose by the Degree Committee of the Degree in Biology. The tutor will assess the way in which the students have worked on a daily basis throughout the semester and the result of that work. The tribunal will assess the final written report of the TFG, as well as the oral presentation of the work.

The management of everything related to the TFG of the Degree in Biology will be carried out mainly through the virtual classroom of the subject. During the first four-month period of each academic year, the TFG offers will be published and the students will choose. The work itself will be carried out during the second four-month period. The tribunals in charge of evaluating each work will be made public during the second four-month period in the virtual classroom.

Once the work is finished and the report is prepared, the students must hand it in at the electronic headquarters of the ULL, within the time limits established by the teaching guide for the subject for each of the three calls (June, July, and September). Once the deadline for each call has ended, the place, date and time of the public presentation of each individual TFG will be published.
