DOI registration
What is a DOI?
A DOI is a Digital Object Identifier, a universal way to identify a digital publication, such as an electronic journal article, an e-book chapter, or a conference paper. This system allows for the unique identification of the object, regardless of its URL, so that if the URL changes, the object retains the same identifier. It is used extensively in electronic publications such as scientific journals and others.
Usefulness and interest of the DOI
Assigning a DOI to an electronic edition facilitates searching and
locating a document on the network, guaranteeing that it will always be
available. This makes it possible to quantify the number of reads, citations and dissemination of the work, parameters necessary (although not the only ones) to be able to include the publications within the scientific quality indexes.
Structure of a DOI
A DOI has three parts separated by a slash (/): the first part has the form https://doi.org, the second identifies the entity (in the case of ULL it is the number 10.25145) and the third part identifies the object.
Example of a magazine article:

Types of documents to which the DOI is assigned
The ULL only assigns DOIs to documents that are the product of the academic activity of members of our university community, and specifically the following:
- Journals published by the ULL (titles, issues and separate articles)
- Books published by the ULL (titles, in the case of monographs; titles and chapters, in the case of collective works)
- Conference publications (the proceedings as a whole and each presentation, communication, etc. separately)
- Doctoral theses read at the ULL
- Technical reports prepared by ULL staff
Who can apply for a DOI
People who, being members of the ULL, are authors or editors of the documents for which they request it and that are included among the categories mentioned above.
Procedure for assigning the DOI (General)
- The author or editor of a work sends a message to the address regdoi@ull.es requesting the assignment of the DOI for it and indicating the descriptive data of the work (title, author(s), publisher, publication date).
- The Library assigns a DOI to the work and communicates it to the interested party so that they can incorporate it into the definitive file of the work.
- The interested party sends to regdoi@ull.es The Library incorporates the final file of the work into the Institutional Repository (RIULL) and registers it in the DOI database.
This procedure is conditional upon verification of the identity of the authors and the submitted works.
Procedure for assigning DOIs to journals
- The people in charge of the magazine send a message to the address regdoi@ull.es requesting the assignment of the DOI, and attaching a table containing the following fields:
- Author(s)
- Article title
- File name
- Home page
- Final page
- The Library assigns a DOI to each article, as well as to the complete issue.
- The Library informs the journal of the assigned DOIs so that they can be included in the text of each article and issue. In the case of journals published by the University's Publications Service, the DOIs are communicated to that service.
- The journal or, where applicable, the Publications Service sends to the address regdoi@ull.es the files with the text of the issue and the inserted DOIs
- The Library uploads the files to the Institutional Repository and registers the DOIs in the database, and from that moment on the DOIs are active.
This procedure is conditional upon verification of the identity of the authors and the submitted works.
