Abstract

Within the universe of Persian miniatures, the Safawï (1502-1736) period represents a golden age, which the western theory of art has only tangentially been able to approach. One of the main difficulties has lied in the singular nomenclature traditionally used to classify the practice. All attempted approaches, therefore, require an understanding and acceptance of this particular terminology. This study intends to analyse some of the main terms used by Safawï painters in order to decipher the content of their work and establish possible equivalencies with western pictorial genres.
