Abstract

Contemporary sculpture has opened its limits until they have disappear ed and adapts to new proposals and presentations with surprising ease. Within this complex panorama, our intention is to define sculpture, which is based on the essential character of the four natural elements, earth, water, air and fire identified in the sculptural proposals of numerous sculptors as a dominating and defining trend, albeit not unique. The earth is identified with matter and this is the principal evocation in the work of Vicente Ortí, or Jan Fabre. Water is related to form, because of its intrinsic lack of it and form is at the centre of the work of Enric Mestre, Paco Pestana. Air is the element most clearly identified with space, to which we associate the works of Eduardo Chillida, or Anthony Caro. Finally, fire, the lightest of the elements, is identified with time r ecalling the works of Giuseppe P enone, Bartolomé Ferrando.
