The system of modern art and teaching artistic production: critical review and proposal

Abstract

Some theories of the modern art system, especially those derived from its «extended» concept of what is artistic, imply potential contradictions and even incompatibilities with the development of an operational teaching methodology in the sphere of ar tistic university education. The premises of this modern art system are analysed, including the criticisms it has received and the, inefficient in our opinion, teaching models that it has generated. In conclusion, the bases for a methodological proposal that allows an efficient practice in our inescapable context of production and instruction. This article is understood as a continuation of «Learning pictorial practice: approximations to a methodology». I n the latter, we focused on the description of a teaching methodology of its own for modern art, applicable to the learning of the foundations of ar tistic practice. In this ar ticle, we deal with the difficulties and possibilities pro vided by the modern ar t system as a model, especially in developing higher levels of training for autonomous artistic production and its instruction.
