Reflections on Darkness in Relation to The Evolution Of Thought And Art
Abstract
Many visual works of contemporary art found today have precursors in other periods of art history. These coincidences, whether formal or conceptual, and despite their temporal distance, make it possible to bring substantially diverse worlds closer together. Art and thought frequently resort to alternative expressive resources to communicate certain ideas that are difficult to define more explicitly. Allegories, symbols, metaphors are often used to express ideas and feelings. Shared conceptual associations that we use regularly. Among these associations is the light —dark pairing. This is probably the most universal mnemotechnical connection that has ever been established and the most polyvalent of metaphorical and symbolic resources. Especially darkness, conceptualised as an autonomous element, but linked to the light. In the current article the author reflects on conceptual parallels that exist between ideas expressed in other time periods and today, in relation to the role of darkness as a figurative resource in the context of artistic expression. Special attention is paid to its contemporary use, as support for the construction of artistic discourse.
