ZONE 10. SUMMIT SCRUB

In this plot, a very characteristic and exclusive type of vegetation from the islands of Tenerife and La Palma will be created: the summit scrubland.

The plants native to this vegetation zone that have been introduced to the plot were provided by the Teide National Park Management Agency, following a request from the Parks and Gardens Service of the University of La Laguna (ULL). More plants will continue to be requested as needed, since we will not be managing their propagation, except for those located in the transition zone or ecotone between the pine forest and the high-mountain scrubland, which do not require permits from the National Park. Thus, we have taken advantage of the existing large Canary Island pines, which help us understand the transition zone between the pine forest and the summit scrubland.

Work on this plot has been underway since 2013, but it wasn't until 2022 that efforts began to transform the area into an exhibition of plants from Mount Teide. This plot was chosen because, in the early years, several Canary Island cedars were planted there, which are the only trees within the Las Cañadas cirque. These cedars have now reached a considerable size.

As we have already seen, the species in this vegetation zone are adapted to very harsh conditions characterized by extreme temperatures, scarce rainfall, strong winds, and high levels of sunlight, which has led the plants living there to develop diverse survival mechanisms. It is possible that when these species are introduced to the plot, they will undergo morphological changes and may not be entirely similar to those found on the summits of Tenerife and La Palma.

A specimen of Canary willow has been introduced because it is able to live on the edges of the Park associated with natural water sources, therefore this plot has been chosen for the placement of a small pond to reproduce the habitat of the species associated with water sources in the high mountains.
