Word and image in the 16th Century
an audiovisual method in the evangelization of the New World
Abstract
One of the methods used by the first missionaries, especially the Franciscans, in the evangelization of the peoples of the New World is based on the use of the image in its most diverse forms of manifestation: paintings, engravings, canvases, pictographic catechism, etc., very much in harmony with the use of images on the part of the Indians in the transmission of their knowledge. This method, authentically audiovisual, is developed by the Franciscan Diego Valadés in his Rhetorica Christiana, in which twenty-seven engravings appear for the first time, widely used in the evangelization and conversion of the Indians.
