En el corazón de la calle: el mercado islámico
Abstract
This work focuses on the suq, the souk, as an essential element in the Arabian Muslim civilization. The assessment regards souks both as physical loci and as economic and social institutions, paying attention also to the possible models of insertion of souks into urban webs, to their inner organization, and to the main participants and regulators of their trading activities, as well as to other relevant issues. The analysis of documentary evidence concerning souks is also carried out, namely that of the hisba tracts, originally conceived for those civil servants in charge of welfare at the souk. These sources comprise all sorts of information and data about the souk structure, organization and activies, as well as about methods to detect delinquency and instructions for crime control.
