The symbology of colors in the Horto do Esposo
Abstract
Horto do Esposo is a religious and moral treatise of an ascetic tendency from the late 13th century or early 14th century. In it, the author, possibly a monk, speaks of the benefits of reading the Holy Scriptures and condemns worldly life and the pleasures connected with it, through multiple examples. The text has an accentuated symbolic aspect that calls for its decoding. Colors are cited in it with symbolic-allegorical content, allowing us to analyze their functions and meanings and contribute to the study of color symbologies in medieval Galician-Portuguese literature. The comparative analysis with the connotations of the colorings referred to in two other medieval works disclosed in the same geographical space, as well as with the symbolisms presented for the colors by other authors, will allow to underline the uniqueness of the Horto do Esposo or its connection with tradition.
