Abstract

Inspired by the memories of ancient or Carolingian gardens, the medieval garden takes form and spreads from the 11th and 12th centuries in France and Italy, in the same process that witnesses the birth of villages. The garden is a working place, mostly feminine, but it is also a place to live, where one can share a meal under the vine. And it is a place for dreams and myth, as the very frequent pictures of the Virgin and Child that take place in gardens reveal. The garden, the mark of a civilization, can be found everywhere, from the most humble cottages to the precints of mansions and castles.
