The Journal

Fortunatae. Revista Canaria Filología, Cultura y Humanidades Clásicas is a free, both for authors and readers, and an open access electronic journal managed by the Department of Classics, French, Arabic and Romance Studies of the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain).

Its name alludes to the mythical universe of the Fortunatae insulae, the Mακάρων νήσοι, whose geographical and onomastic wanderings eventually led to the Canary Islands. When the journal was launched in 1991, the idea was to produce a six-monthly publication. Despite many ups and downs, the idea took shape and the cycle has been maintained since 2019. Although most issues are miscellaneous, monographs are occasionally published.

Editorial Policies and Declarations

Editorial Teams: A History

Fortunatae’s first editorial team led by Ángel Martínez Fernández (editor) and Francisca del Mar Plaza Picón (secretary) produced the first eight editions (1991–1996). They were followed, respectively, by Francisco González Luis and María José Roca Alamá, who continued until issue 12 (1997–2001). Isabel García Gálvez and Francisco Salas Salgado were responsible for publishing numbers 13 to 16 (2002–2005), while Fremiot Hernández González and Juan Barreto Betancort continued to edition 20 (2006–2009). Juan Barreto, with Pilar Lojendio Quintero as secretary, went on to produce issues 20 to 26, over a six-year period (2010–2016), which saw significant changes: the transition to digital publication in CD format, from number 22 onwards (the paper format was abandoned), shortly followed by the digital edition. The next editorial team, José Antonio González Marrero and Gloria González Galván, published numbers 27 to 31 (2016–2020). In 2020, Miguel Ángel Rábade Navarro (editor) and María del Socorro Pérez Romero (secretary) stepped in to lead the editorial team, aided and advised by the Editorial Board and the Scientific and Advisory Committee. Since July 2025 the positions have been exchanged, due to an incompatibility of responsibilities that converge in the person of Miguel Ángel Rábade Navarro.

The Scientific and Advisory Committee is open to new members, but not the Editorial Board, which has limited numbers and is renewed or confirmed every four years. Below is a list of current and former members:
