Author Guidelines

PUBLICATION STANDARDS OF FORTVNATAE JOURNAL (ULL)

(AUTHOR GUIDELINES)

The journal Fortunatae is a biannual publication (June and December) of the University of La Laguna (ULL). It welcomes original and unpublished research projects related to Greek and Latin Philology, Classical Studies and the classical world and its survival, in general. All articles must go through a first evaluation by the Editorial Board, and, if accepted, will subsequently be subjected to double-blind peer review (external evaluators who are experts in the subject of the article). Papers accepted by the Editorial Board that do not comply with the editorial standards will be returned to their authors for possible corrections, prior to continuing the review process. In the case of reviews, these must be of a critical, not merely descriptive, nature and must also be accepted by the Editorial Board. The editors reserve the right to inform of the corrections or suggestions they deem appropriate.

  1. Submission of original articles

Authors must be registered (register) before uploading any proposal. If already registered, they can log in to begin the process.

  1. Publishing standards

2.1. Text features

The articles will not exceed 25 pages (except for bibliography) and will be written in a 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1.5 line spacing and no prior or subsequent spacing. For Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and other special characters, a Unicode font (preferably Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, or Palatino Linotype) should be used. The margins will be standard: 2.5 cm (top and bottom), 3 cm (sides), and paragraph indent of 1 cm.

Reviews must not exceed five pages. The same formal conditions set out for the articles apply.

Papers may be submitted in Spanish, French, English, Italian, or Portuguese, and must have a summary and title (no more than 200 words) in Spanish and English (and in the language in which the work has been written, in the event of being other than Spanish or English).

Keywords will be included (five maximum), separated by commas, in lowercase, and in both (or all three) languages, avoiding general terms that do not provide precise references to the content and avoiding words already included in the title.

Under the title, the articles must indicate the name of the author, affiliation, country, a working email address, and the author's ORCID. In the case of multiple authors, the chosen ordering method (see Authorship and Contributions) should be indicated with an asterisk after the names, with an asterisk call that will appear as a note on the second page immediately before the fist footnote.

The text of the article itself will start on the second page.

Editable documents are supported in any version of Word (Word 97 or later), OpenOffice, or FreeOffice. For comparison purposes, a pdf file of the submitted document must also be sent. A file containing no data that may reveal the authorship of the work (including erasure of any personal information in the Properties section of the document) should also be included for blind peer review. External images, tables, and graphs and, in general, any inserted document that has been generated outside the word processor, must be attached as a separate file in two formats: the file extension and as an image (png or jpg).

There will be four levels of sections at most, namely:

  1. CENTRED UPPERCASE

1.1. SMALL CAP ON THE LEFT

1.1.1. Round bold on the left

1.1.1.1. Italics on the left

2.2. Graphic signs, transcriptions, and quotes

Use inverted commas (“ ”) to quote and transcribe texts and highlight words, as well as translations, in the body of the text, and single quotes (‘ ’) for meanings. If several levels of quotes are needed, the hierarchy will be as follows: “ ‘ ’ ”. Use square brackets ([ ]) for parentheses within parentheses and for phonetic transcriptions. Place phonological transcriptions between forward slashes (/ /).

Do not use bold. Use italics to highlight a word or phrase within a quoted text. If the text is already in italics, that same enhancement effect will be achieved with roman type letters.

There should be no end-of-line words breaks, and page breaks should not be forced.

Quotations that exceed five lines should be placed without quotation marks in a separate, indented paragraph (11 point font and paragraph indentation of 1 cm to the right and left, with no first line indentation). Any elision in a quote should be expressed with ellipses.

Footnote numbers will always follow the punctuation sign that may follow the word (note2.).

The abbreviations of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (TLL) will be used in quotes of Latin authors. For Greek authors, the abbreviations used will be those of the Greek–Spanish Dictionary (DGE), or those of the Liddell, Scott, Jones Ancient Greek Lexicon (LSJ). Example: Hor., Sat. 1, 2, 107-108.

In general, The MLA/Chicago system will be used for bibliographical references, included at the end of the paper, with references to the bibliography in the main body of the text or in the notes. Footnotes will be explanatory only, and those that only cite the author, year, and page will be included within the text: (Morrison, 2007: 41-46). If the author is cited in the body of the text, it will appear as follows: Morrison (2007: 41-46). It is advisable to indicate the first and last page of the citation, to avoid vagueness (s. or ss).

When mentioning several references of the same author published in the same year, please add a letter (1994a, 1994b, 1994c), in the abbreviated reference used throughout the article and in the end bibliography.

If a work has several authors, place a hyphen (-), with a space before and after, in the abbreviated citation and in the end bibliography.

2.3. Bibliography

The bibliography must start on a separate page from the main text.

Whenever possible, the works cited should include the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) code.

The list of references will be strictly limited to those cited in the text and will be included at the end in an alphabetical list with hanging indentation.

The model for books will be as follows:

SIGELMAN, A. C. (2016): Pindar’s Poetics of Immortality, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge.

In the event of being published by more than one publisher and/or city, the model will be as follows:

MURRAY, O. (1990): Sympotica. A symposion on the Symposion, Clarendon Press - Oxford University Press, Oxford - New York.

For several authors, the model is as follows:

GENTILI, B. - BERNARDINI, P. A. - CINGANO, E. - GIANNINI, P. (1995): Pindaro. Le Pitiche, Fondazione Lorenzo Valla, Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, Milano.

Places of publication are preferred in the original language.

Journal articles should be cited, where possible, as used in and abbreviated by L'Année Philologique, as follows:

LUQUE MORENO, J. (2007): «‘Agua de Éstige’, agua del horror», FlorIlib 18: 251-309.

For book chapters:

SUÁREZ DE LA TORRE, E. (2013): «Apollo and Dionysus: Intersections», A. BERNABÉ et alii (eds.), Redefining Dionysus, De Gruyter, Berlin - Boston, pp. 58-81.

For electronic publications, the following serves by way of example:

POMPEI, A. (2011): «De la classification typologique des phrases relatives en latin classique», Emerita 79.1: 55-82.

In any case, authors are recommended to look at the submission preparation checklist.

Supplementary Material

In addition to the main manuscript text, authors may submit supplementary material, such as additional texts, images, data tables, maps, transcriptions, etc.

If authors wish to include supplementary material with the manuscript, they must specify the type of material by selecting the corresponding option in the dropdown menu available at the time of file upload.

The format of the supplementary material files must comply with the specifications outlined in the guidelines stated above.

Additionally, all supplementary materials must be numbered and include a title for easy identification.

If any supplementary material is referenced in the main manuscript text, it must be indicated either in a footnote of the manuscript and/or within the supplementary material itself, following the instructions provided in these guidelines.

Funding Source Declaration

Authors must commit to declaring any public or private financial support they have received, if applicable, for the production of their work. This includes all activities leading to the preparation of the manuscript, such as writing, prior research activities, data analysis and subsequent interpretation, final revision, etc.

The funding information should include:

  • Name of the funding entity or fund

  • Project or grant identification number

This information should be included in the manuscript document, as a footnote on the first page, preceded by the text “With the support of:”

Additionally, it must be included in the article's metadata during the upload process. To do this, use the “Supporting Agencies” field provided in the form.

If the authors did not receive any kind of funding or grant for the preparation of their work, the literal “None” must be indicated, both in the “Supporting Agencies” field and following the text “With the support of” at the bottom.

Authors of manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements will be notified to correct this omission.

Inclusive Language and Non-Sexist Content

Formally, the use of inclusive language is recommended, avoiding the masculine as a universal reference, thus highlighting both genders. Regarding content, it is mandatory to avoid the development of sexist concepts that, by extension, violate the dignity of people based on their sex, as well as the rights to equality, diversity, and sexual identity of individuals.
