Appropriations from “Decadent” Latinity in the 19th: The Case of À rebours by J. K. Huysmans
Abstract
As criticism has pointed out, the topic of the latin décadence is central for the history and literature of the last decades of the French nineteenth century. The historical imagination of the fin-de-siècle is haunted by the fall of the Western Roman Empire, an event that is considered a kind of anticipation of the modern décadence. One of the most interesting cases of this reflection on the Latin décadence is À rebours (1884) by Joris Karl Huysmans, a novel that explicitly formulates a theory of decadent literature. This theory allows the discussion of issues such as literary evolution, the use of tradition or the antithesis between materialism and spiritualism. The library of chapter III of À rebours therefore appears as a singular experiment of reading, since it expresses the “anachronism” of décadence itself: des Esseintes uses the Latinity to present problems that are clearly modern.
