The Experimental Garden with Native Plants of Tenerife

A sustainable space for the study of Canary Island flora from an ornamental point of view at the University of La Laguna

Teaching

For some years now, the Experimental Garden has been a space to support teaching activities.

It turns out to be a functional testing ground where students can put into practice much of the gardening knowledge they have acquired about design, layout, earthmoving, planting and maintenance.

A seminar/workshop on the use of native flora for ornamental purposes is held annually.

Students in the Gardening and Landscaping course receive basic training on the subject under a participatory approach.

The on-site identification of numerous native species allows students to become familiar with the local flora and its management, identifying the needs and functions of the different species. Organized into working groups, they carry out small interventions in the garden, contributing to its expansion or renovation.

Project development

At the end of 2019, the Governing Council of the University of La Laguna approved the concession of the gardens of the Central Campus to the City Council of La Laguna for 20 years.

A final year project by a student at the Polytechnic School addresses the renovation of this urban space using a modern and functional design. It utilizes an extensive catalog of native species to organize the plant compositions of the different proposed areas. (PDF).
