The Experimental Garden with Native Plants of Tenerife
A sustainable space for the study of Canary Island flora from an ornamental point of view at the University of La Laguna
Investigation
The native flora of the Canary Islands has been the subject of numerous scientific studies from ethnobotanical, taxonomic, ecological, and evolutionary perspectives. It has also generated considerable interest in the fields of phytochemistry and pharmacology, but surprisingly, applied research for ornamental use remains rather limited.
In the garden, different observations related to the biology of the species are made.
Other studies are of an agronomic nature
The ornamental value of the species also occupies an important place
Experimental final degree projects
Students at the Polytechnic School have the opportunity to carry out studies related to the flora of the Canary Islands.
A paper on the vegetative reproduction of the Canary Island sagebrush (Allagopappus canariensis) was recently defended (2020) by a student of the School. This interesting endemic shrub with profuse yellow flowers is cultivated in the experimental garden and is suitable for rock gardens, planters, and as a ground cover. (PDF)
