The Experimental Garden with Native Plants of Tenerife
A sustainable space for the study of Canary Island flora from an ornamental point of view at the University of La Laguna
Plant material
In the first stage, different species were propagated within the framework of road and viewpoint beautification projects.
In later years, the La Tahonilla nursery, run by the Island Council, provided the seedlings. In 2016, production began for self-sufficiency, using reproductive material from the garden itself, the school's agricultural property, and other landscaped areas.
The project focuses on sustainability, self-sufficiency, and resource efficiency. Pots and containers are reused, and trays, plastic bottles, and cartons from commercial products are also repurposed as seed trays or containers.
The substrates are prepared in the nursery itself by combining different materials: topsoil from the vegetable gardens, volcanic rock, homemade plant compost, gravel from the irrigation system filters, recycled substrates from other crops, etc. Fertigation, when necessary, is carried out using 'sefel' (a liquid fertilizer made at the School from the controlled fermentation of organic and mineral materials).
The garden has no associated commercial activity and does not give plants to individuals or other public or private entities.
The specimens obtained from the nursery are planted in the garden itself to replace any that have died or to study the ornamental potential of the corresponding species.
