The Prosopopoiia in Aelius Theon
Abstract
The Progymnasmata manuals that we have discovered display similarities in the exposure of the exercises. However, regarding prosopopoiia, often called ethopoiia, some differences are present, especially regarding the definition and form of execution. Although proven to be different, these forms of rhetoric complement rather than conflict each other. In the treatment Aelius Theon makes of this rhetorical exercise stands out for his extensive rhetorical basis. This communication intends to develop a detailed analysis of the art that the rhetor proposes in order to create prosopopoiia. A clear link to this progymnasma is the Aristotelian theory of the property of speech, drawn to establish the characterization, essential to an intense reflexive process that requires finding arguments that correspond with the characters and circumstances that may determine them.
