Abstract

Arturo Ripstein and Paz Alicia Garciadiego find most of the ideas for their films in literary texts. In this paper, we try to show how they use particular adaptations of these texts in order to create their personal and fatalistic conception of the human being, and depict his/ her difficult relationship to society. We also try to show how these versions become subversions, not only because they turn most of the beliefs of Mexican culture upside down, but also because they do so by transforming the traditional way of making films.
