The Epistle to the Ephesians of Saint Ignatius of Antioch in connection with Gospel and Epistles of Saint John
Abstract
This paper attempts to answer a requently debated question among scholars, namely whether St. Ignatius of Antioch knew the Gospel and Epistles of St. John or not. This has a very important bearing on the dating of joanic writings. The Epistle to the Ephesians of St. Ignatius was chosen because Ephesus, by tradition, is the place where the Fourth Gospel was composed. In this paper the Epistle of Saint Ignatius is firstly studied, paying special attention to the places with joanic resonances both in vocabulary and in theological concepts. Later a view in which the two positions are synthesized is arrived at in the conclusion.
