Deception in Utopian Landscapes in the Odyssey
Abstract
The places where Odysseus and other characters in the Odyssey travel are briefly analyzed in this work to manifest their common traits as utopian landscapes. Even if they are islands in the extreme parts of the world, they are essentially Mediterranean landscapes. There are three images that intertwine: the abundant nature, the domesticated garden and the city of bronze. What defines a utopia is not just the place, but the social and psychological basis of their inhabitants. Through the landscape there are some expectations created, but they are not always confirmed because of the violence of the inhabitants. This violence is sometimes open and sometimes hidden.
