Author Guidelines
Clepsydra: International Journal of Feminist Studies and Gender Theory is a scientific journal subject to double-blind peer review, published biannually (March and November) by the Institute of Women’s Studies of the Universidad de La Laguna. It accepts original works on topics related to Gender Studies, Feminism, and Women’s Studies, from an interdisciplinary perspective.
This journal publishes articles (article template), interviews (interview template, with horizontal and vertical photos), and reviews (review template). Neither interviews nor reviews are subject to blind peer review. For their acceptance, they must be related to Gender Studies, Feminisms, and Women's Studies. The editorial team decides whether they will be published and communicates this decision to the authors
You are recommended to read through the editorial policies and publication and submission guidelines at About the Journal and Submissions. Article submissions which don't adapt to this template will be rejected.
Any review not submitted in accordance with this template will be rejected.
Any interview not submitted in accordance with these templates (with a horizontal or vertical photo) will be rejected.
The editorial does not follow a predefined template but must have a title identical to that of the monograph and be written in Garamond font, size 12 pt., with 1.5 line spacing.
MANUSCRIPT ORGANIZATION
The structure of the articles will follow the IMRD+C and B formula (Introduction + Methodology + Results + Discussion + Conclusions and Bibliography):
Introduction
It will address the state of the question, the justification of the interest in the topic being researched, and the objectives or hypotheses of the research.
Methodology
It will describe the method and techniques used in the research and justify their suitability for the research topic.
Results
It will present the findings obtained, concisely and correctly organized.
Discussion
It will establish the relationships, agreements, and contradictions between the results obtained and also with previous researches, if any. The degree of internal and external value of the results will be explained.
Conclusions
These should summarize the inferences obtained from the research results. They should not be a repetition of the results or the discussion but go a step further, and even propose recommendations. Conclusions should also include the limitations of the research.
MAIN TEXT STYLE
Typography
The articles should be written in Word, using Garamond font, size 12pt, and 1.5 line spacing.
Justification
The text should be justified on both sides.
Line Breaks
Words should not be split at the end of a line, nor should page breaks be forced.
Notes
Notes should be kept to a minimum and used only for supplementary information. They should be numbered and indicated in the body of the text in superscript format. Footnotes should be in size 10pt and single-spaced.
Structure
If necessary, the body of the text should be divided into numbered sections in bold Arabic numerals, starting with 0. for the Introduction. If there are subdivisions, the same system should be followed: 1.1., 1.2., etc.
IN-TEXT CITATION OR BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE STYLE
They will be placed in parentheses within the body of the text, never in footnotes, and must be properly listed in the References section. The citation rules within the text are those outlined in the Chicago-Deusto Guide using the author-date system, which includes the author’s last name and the year of publication, without punctuation between them. Additionally, the page number or another location element can be added after a comma.
Example:
- Specifying the functions of punctuation marks is even more difficult if we also consider that the list of elements that make up the system is not even closed (Roselló 2008). The question of how many punctuation marks there are and into what types they can be subdivided, based on their function or centrality, is relatively common, according to Cassany (1999).
Long References (four or more lines)
They will be highlighted from the text by an indented paragraph, in 11pt font, without quotation marks. The period will be placed after the parenthesis containing the bibliographic reference.
Citations of Works by Individual Authors
Reference to a an author's idea
Examples:
- Velez et al. (2018) found that for women of color, sexism and racism in the workplace were associated with poor work and mental health outcomes, including job-related burnout, turnover intentions, and psychological distress.
- Regarding the use of language, Díaz (2009) differentiates between social and linguistic sexism. The former occurs when the content of the message communicates a situation of discrimination or inequality, while the latter refers to a non-discriminatory situation expressed in a way that prioritizes one gender over another.
Literal Reference to a Text by an Author
It will be in quotation marks and will specify the last name, year of publication, and page number.
Examples:
- The contributions of women in media representation are quantitatively lower, and thus, they contribute to “encoding biases and legitimizing assumptions about […] social asymmetries” (Caldas-Coulthard 1995, 227).
- Zafra (2017, 154) reminds us that “even today, the scrutiny of women always revolves around their body and image. Their consideration in any public sphere is still preceded by ‘an image to comment on,’ a body to take a stance on.”
Citations of More Than One Publication by an Author
When citing more than one publication, the author’s last name of the oldest publication should be included first, followed by the others, separated by semicolons (;), in such a way that they are ordered from oldest to most recent.
Example:
- Women are associated with communal attributes, but leaders are expected to have agentic characteristics, which are identified as masculine (Eagly and Karau 2002; Molero 2009).
Citations of Works by Two Authors from the Same Publication
In citations of works by two authors, the second author's surname and the first author's surname are linked by “y” if the source is in Spanish, and “&” if it is in English or another language.
Citations of Multiple Works by the Same Author
If more than one work by the same author is mentioned, the author’s last name and the year should be included. If there is more than one publication in the same year, ‘a’, ‘b’, etc., should be added after the year and this format should be repeated in the reference list.
Example:
- (Guerrero 2023)
- (Guerrero 2023a)
- (Guerrero 2023b)
Citing works by multiple authors
Four or more authors
If the work has four or more authors, the surname of the first author will be cited firstly, followed by "et al."
Example:
- The glass cliff has been defined as ‘the tendency for women to be more likely than men to be appointed to leadership positions that are risky and precarious’ (Ryan et al. 2016, 466).
Citations as part of a larger textual unit
When the original text citation is part of a larger textual unit and you do not wish to refer to the entire unit, brackets and ellipses should be used to indicate this.
Example:
- […] when it first appeared. […] and so it would often do in the lives of all the inhabitants of the place.
FINAL LIST OF WORKS CITED
Bibliographic entries will appear only at the end of the document. Only the resources cited in the preparation of the work will be included, so that each citation has its corresponding reference in the final bibliography list. The names of authors and editors will be given in full (first names and last names), and a hanging indent will be applied to each entry, according to the Chicago-Deusto system.
Each entry will be organized and presented according to the guidelines below, depending on the type of source (books, journals, chapters, etc.).
Books and Monographies
With one author, compilator or editor
Name and surname will be writen y reverse order.
Example:
- Duch, Lluís. 1998. Mito, interpretación y cultura. Barcelona: Herder
With editor, instead of author
For a book with an editor, the abbreviation ‘ed.’ is added in place of the author. For more than one editor, ‘eds.’ must be used.
Example:
- Notario Ruiz, Antonio, ed. 2005. Contrapuntos estéticos. Salamanca: Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca
With several authors or compilators
In the case of books with two or more authors, only the first author’s name order is inverted in the reference list.
Example:
- León, Orfelio G., e Ignacio Montero. 1993. Diseño de investigaciones: Introducción a la lógica de la investigación en psicología y educación. Madrid: McGraw-Hill.
Journal Articles
Journal article references must include the volume (if available) and issue numbers and the publication date. The issue number, in regular font, will follow the journal name, in italics, without any intervening punctuation. The initial and final page numbers of the article must be included, preceded by a colon followed by a space. The issue number is often provided in parentheses. For citing online journals it is recommended to include a DOI.
Example:
- Simelio, Núria, Xavier Ginesta, Jordi de San Eugenio Vela and Marta Corcoy. 2019. «Journalism, transparency and citizen participation: A methodological tool to evaluate information published on municipal websites». Information, Communication & Society 22: 369-85. doi: https://doi.org/10.1080/1369118X.2017.1386706
- Hernández Guerrero, María José. 2011. «Presencia y utilización de la traducción en la prensa española». Meta 56 (1): 101-108
Book Chapters and Contributions to Colective Books
In references to a chapter or similar division of a book with one or more editors, include the chapter author; the chapter title in quotation marks, and the editor. Precede the book title with ‘In’.
Example:
- Gómez Mendoza, Josefina. 2009. «Ecología urbana y paisaje de la ciudad». In the City of the Future, edited by Antonio Bonet Correa, 177-217. Madrid: Instituto de España.
Websites and Electronic Books
References to electronic documents follow the same format as those for printed documents, but with the addition of the website name, date accessed, and its corresponding link. All URLs should be shortened using systems like Bitly or similar.
Example:
- Instituto Cervantes. 2013. «Red de centros de examen DELE: Procedimientos para ser de la red», accessed on 6th June 2024, https://bit.ly/3X6Ppri
Entries in the List of References with the same or several authors and same year
Works by the same author and from the same year should be differentiated by adding ‘a’, ‘b’, etc., and are ordered alphabetically by title.
