On the Margins, but not Marginalized: The Representation of Maids in Spanish Culture and Literature. Types and Archetypes

2024-07-09

This special issue represents an opportunity to reflect on the various artistic representations of this central character in our cultural history, which continues to generate new interpretations, as demonstrated by the contemporary success of literary works adapted for the screen such as "The Handmaid's Tale" (2017), created by Bruce Miller and based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Scholars are therefore invited to contribute to this special issue, bearing in mind the essential requirement that the proposed work adopts a gender perspective, in accordance with the editorial policy of the journal.

The following thematic areas are proposed:

  1. The maid and her evolution in literature from Antiquity to the present day.
  2. The maid and work: Women's working conditions and exploitation.
  3. The maid and her representation in film, visual arts, and other artistic manifestations.
  4. The representation of the maid from a male perspective.

Original submissions for evaluation will be accepted until October 1, 2024

No 26 (2024): Corporealities: Dialogues on Subject and Gender

Corporealities: Dialogues on Subject and Gender aims to bring into the media spotlight works that approach those other corporealities, the ones that diverge from hegemonic narratives and place themselves at the margins to create new paradigms of representation. The contributions gathered here address, from an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective, the way in which the fact of gender and the social boundaries and constructions that sustain it have conditioned the development of identities and bodies throughout history. From theoretical proposals that tackle corporal representations in contemporary Spanish literature to works that delve into the analysis of dissident corporealities in fields such as music or certain historiographical contexts, this monographic section presents itself as a varied showcase that explores the academic possibilities of this object of study from a multidisciplinary viewpoint.
