Margarita Jambrina Enríquez

Professor of Petrology and Geochemistry (ULL)

About me

My specialized training began at the Stable Isotopes Laboratory of the University of Salamanca and was further enriched at prestigious centers such as the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC), the Organic Surface Geochemistry Lab (University of Potsdam, Germany), and the Antonio González Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry at the University of La Laguna. I am currently a Full Professor in the Department of Petrology and Geochemistry at the University of La Laguna, in Tenerife, Canary Islands.

My research career has been recognized with extraordinary undergraduate and doctoral awards, as well as by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology, and includes competitive contracts and national and international stays.

My main specialty is the geochemistry and isotopic biogeochemistry of Quaternary deposits, a field in which I have been recognized as an Established Researcher (R3 Certificate, 2023). I lead research projects through competitive grants and agreements with public administrations. My research focuses on long-term environmental change, paleoclimatic reconstructions in areas sensitive to global change, and the study of past human-climate interactions.

To this end, I use a multi-indicator approach that combines sedimentology, elemental and isotopic geochemistry, and the analysis of lipid biomarkers in sedimentary records, both natural and anthropogenic. In the context of the Canary Islands, I promote projects that use geochemical indicators to reconstruct climatic and environmental changes from island sedimentary records.

I teach in the Environmental Science and Biology degree programs, and I have been a director and researcher of Educational Innovation and Transfer Projects. I share my teaching and research experience with undergraduate and master's theses, doctoral dissertations, and postdoctoral researchers. I participate in science outreach activities through presentations at national and international conferences and publications, as well as in events aimed at the general public.

I am a geologist. I obtained the European PhD in Geology from the University of Salamanca in 2015 and, more recently, the PhD in Territory and Society from the University of La Laguna (2024).
