With more than two centuries of history since its founding in 1792, the University of La Laguna celebrates in 2027 the Centenary of its contemporary era, a milestone that commemorates the recognition of its own university district and a century of uninterrupted activity.
This celebration converges with a more distant institutional memory that dates back to March 11, 1792, When Charles IV decreed the creation of the original Literary University of San Fernando. The upheavals of the 19th century triggered successive closures and reopenings that culminated in its closure in 1845 and the transfer of its educational mantle to the Institute of the Canary Islands.
After its final reconfiguration, September 21, 1927, The University of La Laguna has remained open steadily for one hundred years, overcoming adversity and consolidating itself as a beacon of public service.
What are we celebrating?
100 years since the reopening of the University of La Laguna with its current name on September 21, 1927. Our contemporary stage.
But wasn't the ULL 235 years old?
Yes: our parent company was created by Royal Decree of Charles IV on March 11, 1792 as the Literary University of San Fernando.
And what happened?
The political instability of the 19th century affected Spanish universities, which experienced closures and reopenings. Our main institution was closed in 1845 and the Canary Islands Institute was created in its place.
And now?
After 100 years of stability, In 2027, the University of La Laguna faces a new stage focused on internationalization, innovative degrees, research excellence and support for regional and social development.
The institution is now embarking on a decisive, future-oriented chapter, reinforcing its transformative commitment in areas such as internationalization, strategic degree programs, and cutting-edge research. It faces this challenge with enthusiasm. the major global challenges without losing the closeness and focus on the integral development of the Canary Islands.
The Centenary will take place throughout 2027 a comprehensive program which will actively involve the entire community. It will alternate institutional events with internationally focused meetings and diverse initiatives that will reach different parts of the Canary Islands.
It will be an intergenerational meeting point that will consolidate the University of La Laguna as a vibrant, open space that forms the backbone of our identity. Therefore, We invite you To the university community, to the Canary Islands society and to all people and entities that feel linked to our institution to be an active part of this commemoration.
