Seminar: “Sartre, Heidegger and the finitude of existence”

April 24 - 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

As part of the cycle “Philosophical Classics and the current world”, the Cultural Chair of Critical Hermeneutics (HERCRITIA) with the support of the Vice-Rectorate of Culture and University Extension, organizes the Seminar: “Sartre, Heidegger and the finitude of existence”.”

The seminar consists of two consecutive sessions of presentation and discussion. The presentations will be given by Professors José Luis López de Lizaga (University of Zaragoza), on "Freedom or Death: Sartre Polemicizes with Heidegger in Being and Nothingness," and Iñaki Marieta (University of La Laguna), on "If Only We Could Die! On Heidegger's Sein zum Tode.".

The presentations will address the question of the temporal finitude of existence through the work of the aforementioned thinkers. The divergences and convergences between these two authors will be explored with the aim of encouraging participants to reflect on this crucial issue. This question has gained fundamental relevance in our present day following the emergence of discourses that suggest the possibility of a “humanity” that is no longer human, having supposedly transcended death as the determining factor of existence. It is important to note the agreement between both thinkers (Sartre and Heidegger) on the essential link between human finitude and freedom.
