Research seminar: "Venezuelan emigration to Latin America and Spain. The Canary Islands case"«

October 26 - 3:30 pm - October 27 - 7:45 pm

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Llega la V edición de Campus América, del 19 al 30 de octubre, un espacio de valoración e impulso de las acciones de internacionalización de la Universidad de La Laguna con el continente americano, este año con Chile como país invitado.

Venezuela, especially in modern times, has experienced a population shortage that led to a policy of attracting immigrants. People from the Canary Islands were targeted at various times, though their suitability was not without debate.

The economic, social, political, and institutional crisis of recent decades in Venezuela has caused the country to cease being an attractive destination for international migration. On the contrary, emigration has increased, particularly between 2015 and 2020, when it is estimated that more than five million people left the country. This situation, categorized as a Complex Humanitarian Emergency (CHE), was exacerbated by the subsequent COVID-19 lockdowns. The scale of this migratory phenomenon has had a significant impact on Latin America, especially on countries like Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador. Among other destinations, the main ones have been the United States and Spain.

In the Canary Islands, Venezuelan emigration has also been significant, especially during the initial phase of this recent crisis. Within the archipelago, it's important to consider the circular migration between the Canary Islands and Venezuela, which has generated a flow not only of people but also of material and symbolic goods. This flow explains migration patterns, networks, and survival/care strategies for people on both sides of the Atlantic.

This seminar will present and analyze this mobility between Latin America and Spain, and its consequences: demographic (changes in the population pyramid), economic, socio-family (family reconfigurations, vulnerability and effects on childcare and the elderly) and gender.
