Scientific Talk «Volcanic Risk: Science and Prevention in the Canary Islands»

September 17 - 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The Tenerife Island Council Bookstore hosts the first activity of the Conecta Cienci@ULL Laboratory, a new science outreach program promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Transfer of the University of La Laguna, the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (Cienci@ULL) and the Tenerife Island Council.

This initiative was created with the aim of To promote scientific culture among the island's citizens through a program of outreach activities delivered by teaching and research staff from the University of La Laguna. Through meetings open to the public, presented in a friendly and participatory format, the program aims to bring the knowledge and research developed at the ULL closer to society, fostering dialogue between the scientific community and the public.

The opening session will be dedicated to volcanic risk and its prevention in the Canary Islands, with a talk entitled What should we, as citizens, do in the face of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands? The lecture will be given by Mr. Ramón Casillas Ruiz, Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of La Laguna and coordinator of the Geology and Volcanology research group in the Canary Islands. He is also the University of La Laguna's representative on the Scientific Committee of PEVOLCA (Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response for Volcanic Risk in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands) and has extensive experience in research and scientific outreach.

The activity will be conducted as a moderated, informative discussion aimed at the general public, designed to encourage participation and address questions. During the session, the main concepts related to volcanic risk (hazard, exposure, and vulnerability) will be explained, and actions that can help reduce this risk in the Canary Islands will be analyzed. The main prevention and self-protection measures that citizens can take before, during, and after a volcanic emergency will also be discussed.
