Seminar: Video games, the manosphere and education in equality

May 20 - 8:00 am - May 21-5:00 pm

Video games are now one of the main forms of socialization for children and young people. They have fun, learn, build relationships, and construct their identity through them. But this cultural space, which should be open and inclusive, is permeated by direct and symbolic violence, where the discourses of the Manosphere have found a massive platform on sites like Forocoches, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch.

These messages don't stay confined to forums: they spill over into online games, where girls suffer harassment and exclusion. Furthermore, the video game's cultural product itself, in its portrayal of characters and narratives, reinforces sexist stereotypes that contribute to normalizing these dynamics. All of this not only shapes the gaming experience but also directly impacts girls' self-perception of their abilities and their interest in pursuing STEM careers, especially those related to video game development.

The result: a persistent gender gap in technology careers that deprives the industry of diverse talent and limits opportunities for female students. This training provides students with practical tools to understand and address these connections within their field, promoting a critical use of video games and fostering equality and digital inclusion.
