International Congress "Moving Spain Forward": Women, Public Sphere and Intermediality around the Lyceum Club Femenino (1926-2026)

April 15 - April 17

The Department of Spanish Philology at the University of La Laguna, in collaboration with the Language and Literature Department, the Performing Arts Department, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Complutense University of Madrid, is organizing the International Congress "Moving Forward Spain's Clock: Women, Public Sphere, and Intermediality in the Lyceum Club Femenino (1926-2026)." This academic event will be held at the Guajara Campus from April 15 to 17, 2026.

The aim of this congress is to reflect on the contexts, history, and cultural and political legacy of the Lyceum Club Femenino, as well as to delve into the mechanisms used by early 20th-century female creators to raise their voices and assert their active presence in the public sphere. Therefore, the congress will examine the structures and agents with which the Lyceum Club Femenino engaged, and continues to engage, in dialogue; explore its national and international antecedents; and analyze intermediality as a strategy of modernity that women explored to channel their feminist and professional projects.
In this way, the aim is to commemorate the centenary of the Lyceum Club Femenino, which is a precursor and cornerstone, to a great extent, of a feminist epistemology in art, politics and Spanish society of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The holding of an academic congress in the Canary Islands, based at the University of La Laguna, invites us to rethink scientific research in general, and literary studies in particular, from the perspective of decentralization and the peripheries, in what has been and is a fundamental enclave for transatlantic exchanges.
