Scientific conference: "Impact of AI on biomedical research"«

November 25 - 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

The Institute of Biomedical Technologies of the University of La Laguna will host a scientific day-workshop entitled "Impact of AI in biomedical research" on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, under the sponsorship of the 2026 Research Program of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Transfer of the ULL.

The workshop will take place in Room 6 of the Faculty of Medicine from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and aims to demonstrate the potential and usefulness of various artificial intelligence (AI) tools for contributing to continuous improvement in the different phases of the biomedical research process (literature search and evaluation, article analysis, evidence synthesis, and support for scientific writing). Participants will work with cases and needs related to biomedical research, prioritizing critical review, traceability, and data protection.

The training will be led by Rafael Herrero Álvarez, PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of La Laguna, with teaching experience in programming, artificial intelligence fundamentals, and the practical use of generative AI tools. His professional activity focuses on the development of automation and process improvement projects using artificial intelligence, which he combines with teaching courses aimed at facilitating the understanding and application of these technologies in different fields.
The preliminary program for the workshop is outlined below:
  • Introduction to AI (theory). Fundamental concepts and evolution of artificial intelligence; machine learning, generative AI and language models; general operation, capabilities, limitations, biases, reliability, ethics and scientific integrity.
  • Questions and literature search. Formulation of research questions and design of prompts; search and screening of publications with Elicit, Consensus, Perplexity or ASReview; verification of sources and references.
  • Critical reading and synthesis. Analysis and comparison of scientific articles using NotebookLM or ChatPDF; extraction of findings, identification of limitations, and development of syntheses and evidence matrices.
  • Research writing and application. Support in the writing of abstracts and scientific texts with ChatGPT/Copilot and DeepL; communication of results, critical review and applied exercise in an ITB research project.
Registration is free until capacity is reached. Please fill out the following form. form.
In addition, a certificate of participation will be issued to attendees.
