The usefulness of roads today: public use vs. public neglect

November 12 - 4:30 PM - 20:00

Historical routes are currently being debated between their status as a strategic resource and the possibility of sustainable use by communities that have appreciated in them a real possibility of improvement, versus their progressive abandonment to the whims of interests of different natures, experiencing all kinds of aggressions and effects that seriously compromise their conservation and the acquisition of value.

Its reputation varies considerably from place to place, and has even changed over time, often overlooking the extraordinary richness of its components and the connection with multiple elements of natural and cultural heritage that link its routes.

As with other elements of our heritage, the conservation of trails can find new opportunities in updating their uses, especially through public services linked to nature tourism and protected natural areas. This responsible use, without distorting their identity or heritage values, contributes to keeping them alive, generating opportunities for local communities, and strengthening their conservation.

Reflecting on these aspects is crucial at this time, since in certain cases there is a risk of losing invaluable elements and, consequently, diminishing opportunities for community-based territorial development processes. It is also important to do so from a comparative perspective, taking into account what has happened in other areas and with other experiences.
