Book presentation: "Western Sahara 1975. The end of colonialism"«

November 10 - 6:00 PM - 20:00

The Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication hosts the presentation of the book: «Western Sahara 1975. The end of Francoist colonialism», which will take place on Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 pm.

The event will be presided over by Inmaculada González González, Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Cooperation at the University of La Laguna, Isaías Barreñada, author and professor of International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid, and José Abu-Tarbush, professor of Sociology at the ULL.

Spanish colonialism in Western Sahara was largely a product of the Francoist dictatorship. The book recounts the end of the Spanish presence in 1975 and the first months of 1976, linking the disintegration and end of the regime, external interference, the emergence of independence movements, and Spain's abandonment of the colony and its decolonization responsibilities before the United Nations.

Spanish colonialism in the Sahara was not "harmless and benign," as it is often presented; in that territory there was domination by military means, exploitation, repression, discrimination and racism.

Colonialism was another dimension of the dictatorship, and the abandonment carried out by the government of Arias Navarro, submitting to imperialist geopolitical logics and trying to preserve economic interests, was the last colonial expression of the dictatorship.

Western Sahara remains, today, the largest and most populated colony (non-self-governing territory according to the United Nations) awaiting its self-determination.
