Water, energy and climate change: challenges for the Canary Islands in the 21st century

October 12

The course «"Water, energy and climate change: challenges for the Canary Islands in the 21st century"» It is part of the 2026 University Extension Courses program «"Connect+ Expand your Knowledge.". It will be held in an asynchronous online format between October 12 and 23.

Goals:

  • Analyze the hydrological and climatic context of the Canary Islands, identifying the main factors that condition the availability and quality of water.
  • Understanding the impacts of climate change on the island's hydrological cycle, including variations in rainfall, aquifer recharge, and water demand.
  • Evaluate the relationships between water, energy and agriculture within the framework of the ecological transition and climate neutrality.
  • Understanding the link between climate crisis and access to energy, exploring local solutions that promote self-sufficiency, efficiency and the transition to sustainable energy models on islands.
  • To learn about tools and methodologies for estimating the water and energy footprint in island agricultural systems.
  • Promoting critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making in the face of the climate and energy challenges of the 21st century.

This course is aimed at university students in fields related to environmental science, agricultural, civil, or forestry engineering, geography, and sustainability, as well as professionals in the water, agricultural, and energy sectors interested in understanding the effects of climate change on the islands' natural resources. It is also geared towards technical staff from public administrations, water and energy companies, and teachers who wish to update their knowledge of sustainable water management and the water transition.

Academic Director: Juan Carlos Santamarta Cerezal. University Professor, Department of Agricultural and Natural Environment Engineering, University of La Laguna.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE, COMPETENCE AND RECOGNITION BY ECTS CREDIT

The University of La Laguna, through the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension, will issue a certificate of attendance to all those who participate in at least 80% of the teaching hours.
