Opening of the exhibitions: «Chile: Voices of Patagonia. Secrets of the Seabed» / «Chile: Voices of Patagonia: Martin Gusinde» / «Two hemispheres, one sky: Canary Islands and Chile»

October 23 - 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

The fifth edition of Campus America is coming, from October 19 to 30, a space for evaluating and promoting the internationalization actions of the University of La Laguna with the American continent, this year with Chile as the guest country.

The cultural program includes an exhibition of great scientific, heritage, and symbolic value, inviting visitors to explore the links between Chile and the Canary Islands through nature, memory, and knowledge. “Chile: Voices of Patagonia. Secrets of the Seabed,” in collaboration with Filantropía Cortés Solari and Sorensen, offers a profound and sensitive look at southern marine ecosystems, revealing the richness and fragility of the Patagonian ocean floor. Meanwhile, “Chile: Voices of Patagonia: Martin Gusinde,” promoted by Filantropía Cortés Solari and Atelier EXBen, with the collaboration of the Chile-Spain Foundation, recovers the figure of ethnologist Martin Gusinde and his fundamental legacy in the study of the indigenous peoples of Patagonia. This transatlantic dialogue is further complemented by the exhibition “Two Hemispheres, One Sky: The Canary Islands and Chile,” created for Campus América, featuring images of observatories in both territories. It highlights the shared scientific excellence in astronomy and the connection between two privileged locations for observing the universe. Together, these exhibitions form a journey that intertwines science, culture, heritage, and territory, reinforcing the historical and contemporary ties between both sides of the Atlantic.

EXPO 1, “Chile: Voices of Patagonia. Secrets of the Seabed,” in collaboration with Cortés Solari Philanthropy and Sorensen. Campus América is hosting a visually and scientifically impactful exhibition that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the secrets of the Southern Ocean through the stunning images of diver and photographer Eduardo Sorensen. The exhibition is part of an ambitious project spearheaded by Cortés Solari Philanthropy and the MERI Foundation, which for several years has been developing a photographic-scientific inventory to document the unique biodiversity of the seas of Northern Patagonia in Chile, in a context marked by the growing threats facing the oceans. The images, captured in the waters surrounding the Melimoyu Elemental Reserve, reveal an exceptional ecosystem, remarkable for its beauty and ecological importance, considered one of the great natural laboratories for effective conservation. This exhibition offers an immersive experience that combines art, science, and environmental awareness, reinforcing Campus América's commitment to sustainability and the protection of natural heritage.

EXPO 2, “Chile: Voices of Patagonia: Martín Gusinde.” The exhibition “Chile: Voices of Patagonia: Martín Gusinde,” presented by Filantropía Cortés Solari and Atelier EXBen, with the collaboration of the Chile-Spain Foundation, offers a profound and respectful look at the ancestral memory of the indigenous peoples of southern Chile through the work of ethnologist Martín Gusinde. The exhibition brings together a valuable archive of unique historical photographs taken by Gusinde between 1918 and 1924 during his expeditions among the Selk'nam, Yaghan, and Kawésqar communities, capturing aspects of their daily lives, rituals, traditions, and worldviews at a time of profound social and cultural transformations. This visual legacy, restored and enhanced, constitutes an irreplaceable testament to the intangible heritage and cultural identity of Patagonia, and is presented at Campus América as an opportunity to connect with these voices of the past that still resonate in the present.

EXPO 3, The exhibition “Two Hemispheres, One Sky: The Canary Islands and Chile,” created especially for Campus América, invites visitors on a visual and scientific journey through two territories united by their shared view of the universe. Through stunning photographs by astrophotographers from Chile and the Canary Islands, the exhibition reveals the beauty of astronomical observatories and highlights the privileged geographical location and exceptional natural conditions—altitude, atmospheric stability, and low light pollution—that make both enclaves two of the best places in the world for observing the cosmos. This exhibition offers an inspiring experience that connects science, art, and territory, allowing visitors to understand how, from different hemispheres, the Canary Islands and Chile observe the sky and share a common passion for understanding the universe.
