Conference on the circulation of objects, ideas and human groups between the Canary Islands, the Philippines and America

March 6-9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The purpose of the study day “Circulation of Objects, Ideas, and Human Groups between the Canary Islands, the Philippines, and the Americas,” to be held on March 6, is to share recent research related to the formation of the peripheral societies of the Spanish Empire. This will be done from a broad perspective, focusing not so much on structural or static issues, but rather on how the movement of ideas and human groups shapes the historical reality of these societies.

The central theme of this intensive workshop will be the study of peripheral contexts within the Hispanic world, with a particular focus on the Canary and Philippine archipelagos. This aligns with the current strong trend in island studies, while also highlighting marginalized areas of the Americas. All of this will be conducted in constant dialogue, both between these territories and their socio-historical realities, and with other closely linked regions. The exploration of such a broad topic will be developed through three essential frameworks. The first is a re-examination of Canarian identity and heritage, not from an isolated perspective, but rather through interaction with other contexts. The second will examine the role of human groups and power relations in developing colonial societies. And finally, the third will explore the complex juncture of Latin American independence movements from various perspectives, including political and gender-based viewpoints. This initiative features a dynamic program in which emerging researchers will meet and converse with established figures from various European universities. These researchers come from diverse fields of knowledge, including archaeology, history, and linguistics. The program will be headlined by an opening lecture in which the renowned Professor Nathalie Le Brun (University of Strasbourg) will discuss these evolving fields of knowledge, drawing on the Canary Islands' experience with cochineal.

This intensive workshop, which aims not only to connect researchers from across Europe but also to expand scientific knowledge and reflection on the aforementioned topics, is organized by the GEHSAC group at the University of La Laguna and the CHER group at the University of Strasbourg. Therefore, the event will take place simultaneously at both institutions and can also be followed online.

Directors: Ángel Dámaso Luis León for GEHSAC and Álvaro Jimena for CHER.
