Introduction to stick fighting

October 1

The Cultural Classroom of Indigenous and Traditional Canarian Games and Sports, in collaboration with the University Collective of Palo Canario, organizes this course, which will be held in person at the Sports Service of the University of La Laguna on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. between October 1 and December 22, 2026.

The aim of the course is to transmit the basic notions of traditional Canarian stick fencing following the guidelines of the traditional master Don Tomás Déniz Hernández, who dedicated the last 10 years of his life to teaching this ancestral art in the university community of the University of La Laguna.

The introductory course to stick fighting is offered quarterly, with the objective of providing enrolled individuals with the minimum knowledge necessary for the free practice of stick fighting, a complex traditional Canarian stick fencing style. It follows, fundamentally, the teachings of the traditional master, Mr. Tomás Déniz Hernández, who personally taught them at the SD facilities of the ULL between 1973 and 1983. Currently, this teaching is carried out by his disciple, Mr. Ángel González Torres, who is responsible for the course.

Aimed at the university community, especially students, as well as faculty, administrative and service staff and members of the Association of Former Students and Friends of the ULL.

Academic direction:

  • Pablo José Borges Hernández. Contracted Professor with a PhD, Department of Specific Didactics at the University of La Laguna.
  • Alejandro Rodríguez Buenafuente. Palo Canario University Collective.

Taught and coordinated by: Ángel González Torres. Master of stick fighting, Canary University Stick Fighting Collective.
