To mark the 17th anniversary of the declaration of Silbo Gomero as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Institutional Chair of Silbo Gomero of La Laguna is organizing an institutional, academic and cultural meeting that will bring together representatives of public administrations, universities, heritage entities and communities that carry whistled languages from La Gomera and TKuşköy.

The event, which will be held on September 28, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication (Guajara Campus), will be a space to commemorate this important international recognition and to reflect on the current challenges of research, safeguarding and transmission of whistled languages.

The program includes samples of Silbo Gomero (Canary Islands) and the Kuşköy whistling language (Turkey), presentations on heritage and digital preservation initiatives, the screening of a documentary and a panel discussion on shared experiences and challenges in protecting this living heritage, and culminates with an institutional meeting between the participating delegations.
