Visit from Josep Dalmau, National Health Research Prize winner

February 12-1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

The Faculty of Health Sciences, in conjunction with the Institute of Biomedical Technologies, is organizing a seminar on Thursday, February 12th at 1:00 PM with Dr. Josep Dalmau, recipient of the National Health Research Award and one of the most influential international figures in the field of clinical neurology and biomedical research. Dr. Dalmau will deliver a lecture entitled “Autoimmune Encephalitis as a Model for Translational Research.” The seminar is primarily aimed at medical students and faculty, as well as professionals interested in clinical and translational research.

The conference will address the value of translational research based on the speaker's medical-scientific career and the discovery of NMDA receptor antibody-mediated encephalitis, an advance that has brought about a decisive change in the diagnosis and treatment of these neurological pathologies and that constitutes a paradigmatic example of knowledge transfer from the laboratory to clinical practice.

Dr. Dalmau's visit represents an exceptional opportunity for the university community, allowing direct contact with a researcher whose work has had a significant impact on contemporary medicine and on improving care for patients with complex neurological diseases.

A noteworthy aspect of this visit is that it has been led and organized by two medical students completing their final year project on the topic in which Dr. Dalmau is an expert. As part of this project, the students will interview Professor Dalmau and introduce him to their classmates before his lecture.

Josep Dalmau is a neurologist specializing in neuro-oncology, paraneoplastic syndromes, and autoimmune encephalitis. He leads the Clinical and Experimental Neuroimmunology in Autoimmune Encephalitis group at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) at the Hospital Clínic and the University of Barcelona, as well as the Neuroimmunology Unit at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. He is an ICREA researcher, associate professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, and professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania.

This seminar will be held in person in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Nursing. Like all seminars held throughout this year, it can be followed via the following link: Google Meet link.
