Fanzines: Self-publishing and cultural movements

March 17 - 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

The aim of this proposal is, on the one hand, to investigate the relationship between the practice of fanzines and cultural movements, paying special attention to those issues collected in the Canary Islands Collection and, on the other hand, to explore their value as a format and mechanism for communication and defense of freedom of expression.

Students will learn about the fanzine tradition in the Canary Islands, particularly in relation to music, and its connections to various cultural movements, both local and regional, as well as national and even international. In this sense, they will reflect on the value of the fanzine in terms of disseminating ideas and preserving experiences. Fanzine activity, characterized by creative freedom, a personal and situated perspective, and a kind of irreverent restlessness, becomes a source for history marked by the diversity of thought and the fragility of memory.

Furthermore, the course will allow students to explore the possibilities of self-publishing, visual language, and contemporary creation, encouraging reflection on the possible relationships between image, text, and thought through fanzines. By creating their own fanzines and exploring their own visual languages, they will be able to express the concerns of their generation. The course will also enable students to situate their participation in the fanzine movement within a broader cultural context, one that considers the recent history of the Canary Islands and the values of its creative movements.

Aimed at students (preferably those in the subjects of Visual Culture and Contemporary Creation), ULL faculty and anyone interested in art, aesthetics and contemporary culture.
