Presentation of the book “Canary Islands said No: the Canarian movement for peace and against NATO (1978-1986)”

October 22 - 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

On March 12, 2026, the 40th anniversary of the referendum on Spain's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was commemorated. In that referendum, the Canary Islands, along with Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Navarre, voted a resounding "no" to Spain's continued membership. To mark this occasion, the University of La Laguna Library organized a bibliographic and documentary exhibition to contextualize this episode in our recent history, using materials from the University of La Laguna's "Archive on the Democratic Transition in the Canary Islands" (ATDC).

In that context, Storm Therese prevented us from presenting the book "Canary Islands said No: the Canarian movement for peace and against NATO (1978-1986)" by historian Pablo Socorro Arencibia, which will finally take place on Thursday, October 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the General and Humanities Library of the Guajara Campus, in collaboration with the "La Colectiva Foundation".

In the words of Pablo Socorro: «That ‘no’ vote went beyond the scope of the referendum and highlighted a deeper fracture in the political closure of the Transition, whose historical and political significance continues to resonate today (…). This rejection was not a spontaneous or exclusively circumstantial reaction, but the result of a collective process in which a key actor managed to articulate and politicize a shared experience: the Canary Islands peace movement.».
