Seventh Seminar on Applied Linguistics: Issues of interest in forensic expert practice

October 6 - October 7

The Phonetics Laboratory at the University of La Laguna has been continuously offering specialized courses (training, research, and outreach) since its inauguration in 1991. Its aim is to address, from both theoretical and applied perspectives, topics related to voice and speech. The Laboratory's recent interest in forensic science, clinical linguistics, phonetic assessments, and the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) has led to the organization of this seminar. At the opening, we will present an exhibition of instruments and graphic materials illustrating the history of our SEGAI (Scientific and Analytic Linguistics Laboratory) from its inception to the present day.

Furthermore, the participation of several specialists will allow us to address the importance of different issues and their implications for forensic practice, as well as the complexity we encounter in extreme cases, such as voice cloning using generative AI systems, to determine which traits can contribute to the identification of a potential offender. The round table discussion that concludes the course will offer ideas for addressing communication in the internet age.
